How this works

Your name gets trimmed, lowercased, and turned into a number by adding up the character codes of every letter. That number picks a given name from this site's word pools, and a second calculation from the same letters picks a byname to go with it. Nothing about the match is a claim about what your real name "means" in Old Norse; it's a consistent, shareable pairing built from real Old Norse naming material, same spirit as a "what's your Hogwarts house" quiz but built from genuine linguistic elements instead of random chance. Curious what those real elements actually mean historically? Our real Old Norse names page covers real, attested examples.

Want a fresh option instead of your default match? Use "See another match" to nudge the result without losing the connection to your name entirely.

Worked example

Type Jordan with the gender set to Any. The tool adds up the letter codes (638), divides by the 24 names in the pool and uses the remainder, 14, which points to Freyrun. A second sum that weights each letter by its position (2215) is divided by the 12 bynames, and the remainder, 7, gives “the Far-Traveler.” So Jordan becomes Freyrun the Far-Traveler every time, however it is capitalized. Nothing about the sound or meaning of Jordan is used. It is a fun, repeatable mapping, not a translation.

Frequently asked questions

Is this based on real linguistics?

No. The word elements are real Old Norse material, but the match between your specific name and a specific Viking name is a fun, repeatable calculation, not a linguistic translation. No such translation exists for arbitrary modern names.

Will I get the same name every time?

Yes, the first result for a given name and style is always the same. Use "See another match" if you want a different option without changing what you typed.

Can I use this for a character name?

Yes. It works well as a quick, personal starting point for a character name, username, or persona.

This isn't a linguistic translation of your name into Old Norse, that's not something that actually works. It's a deliberate, repeatable match: your name is turned into a number, and that number picks a name and byname from the same real Old Norse word pools used on this site's other generators. Type the same name twice and you'll always get the same first result. Checked on September 10, 2026.
